The La Brea fire started started on August 8, 2009 and has since burned over 85,000 acres of mountainous terrain within the Los Padres National Forest northeast of Los Angeles. The fire was reportedly started by an illegal Marijuana grow operation in the area. Over 2,000 personnel are on scene comprised of 141 engines, 59 camp crews (from as far away as West Virginia), 29 dozers, 54 water tenders, 14 helicopters and 5 fixed wing aircraft.
