STATION FIRE – DC10 Tanker Drops

I pretty much spent the weekend covering the Station Fire, a wildland fire burning just north of Los Angeles.  The fire has consumed over 107,000 acres and taken the lives of two LA County Firefighters.  I have hundreds of images to sift through as well as plenty of video.  Below is a short “teaser” of some footage I shot of the CalFire DC-10 making two consecutive retardant drops in a canyon above Altadena, California, along the east flank of the fire on August 29, 2009.  The tanker holds 12,000 gallons of water and/or retardant and made these drops in an effort to protect a housing development behind us.  It was quite an impressive sight for sure, especially since we didn’t expect the former airliner to be coming in quite that low!

More video and images to follow.  You can view a higher quality version of this video on my YouTube channel.  Stay tuned!
